Sustainability

Our Practices

Since the establishment of MalrikSeam, one of the principal motivating factors has been to make the organisation a successful social enterprise.

SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES

While achieving 100% sustainability is an everlasting process; we have undertaken the following steps to move in a direction that is kinder to the environment:

  • AQI improvement through vertical-gardens
  • Implementation of solar energy
  • Sustainable power backup
  • Verified sustainable fabric suppliers
  • Wet processor self-audits

A few other sustainability practices that are inherent as a part of MalrikSeam’s cultural identity and are shared by our staff as well:

  • Energy conservation – ensuring the cooling system, fans, lights and machines are turned off when not in use
  • Ensuring double sided paper usage – every piece of paper is recycled, when a document is no longer of use, the unused side is utilized for internal workings
  • Switching to a digitalized ERP system – in order to achieve paperless SOP integration and real-time quality updates
  • Offcut segregation and recycling - based on colour and composition
  • EV charging station for employees

AQI IMPROVEMENT

Project Vertical Garden

The current PM2.5 concentration in Gurgaon is often four times higher than the recommended limit given by the WHO. Having safe breathable air is a fundamental right and a necessity for everyone and while policy making at the governmental level is leading the change, the scenario will remain much the same until efforts are made at an individual level.

We have begun a vertical garden project with a few pilot walls, to understand which plants are most suitable for this system of gardening, in our area, and how to optimally water them without any water wastage. The aim of the project is to improve the AQI level in the immediate vicinity and to spread awareness among other neighbouring factories to do the same.

Project Diwali

The festival of Diwali (also known as the festival of lights) is a long-standing tradition in India, that in the last two decades became known for not only air pollution but also noise pollution.

While the government has banned most types of firecrackers, there is a lack of awareness among the populace on how we need to best support our environment in order to ensure a healthier living space.

Thus, on Diwali, we hand out two saplings to each of our staff to plant around their homes, alongside their families. To not only create a healthier environment but also teach the future generations and their neighbours.

EMPLOYMENT SECURITY & SATISFACTION

We always strive to improve the lives of the people that we interact with and effect on a daily basis. Here’s how we attempt to do so:

Ensuring the welfare and security of our staff remains of the utmost importance to us, paying a fair wage, continued salary through COVID, participating in government pension plans, creating a safe environment for female employees with an anonymous complaint and redressal systems are some of the ways we support those who work with us. Over and above that, MalrikSeam funds the school fee’s of certain employees’ children in the hope of a brighter future for them.

We also provide and support vocational training programmes for those of our staff that want to change their area of expertise and learn new skill sets. Understanding and stressing on the importance of upskilling and allowing our employees to attain a more holistic working experience of the business.

SOLAR ENERGY

Solar energy has lately become an easily accessible, efficient and cleaner means of offsetting energy requirements in industries, consequently why MalrikSeam decided to harness solar capabilities. While we currently do not have enough vacant space to offset our entire energy requirements, we have installed a 45.23 kwp solar power system.

The above kwp currently accounts for 55% of our energy requirements. As solar panels become more energy efficient, we hope to increase the amount of energy we generate from renewable resources.

Whilst installing solar panels is a terrific source of generating cleaner energy, it is crucial to understand one's own energy requirements, consequently attempt to reduce consumption and eliminate wastage where possible. Some of the initiatives that we have and are currently undertaking based on the information collected are:

  • Switching to UBT machines with direct drive motors, which are 98% more efficient
  • Setting the boiler to lower pressure setting for a measured reduction of 17.3% in electrical energy
  • Monitoring the boiler energy consumption further, for the purpose of a condensate recovery system, making the system more efficient by 5% - 12%

SUSTAINABLE POWER BACKUP

One of MalrikSeam’s main objectives is to ensure orders are never late and that deliveries reach our clients on time, this can only be achieved through continuous operation during our working hours. Consequently requiring an uninterrupted flow of energy.

While, in the recent years energy supply has become more stable, power outages do occur from time to time, requiring generators to guarantee our continuous work flow. In times past, this would be through means of diesel powered generators, however, a marked shift has been encouraged by the Indian government to fuel-agnostic power generators fuelled by PNG (Piped Natural Gas).

Advantages of gas-based gensets:

  • Zero emission of harmful particulate matter and smoke
  • 30–40% less emission of pollutants such as NOx and CO2
  • 4dbA reduction in noise pollution, as compared to a conventional genset
  • It provides instant energy and does not require pre-heating, making it more efficient

We are also looking to adopt the PNG model to our boiler systems, making it more energy efficient and cleaner.

100% VERIFIED FABRIC SUPPLIERS

90% of the fabric that we purchase is direct from the mill, this allows us more control and traceability of the fabric and its yarn, meaning you get what you pay for.

MalrikSeam employees have personally visited the mills, to not only build relationships with our suppliers, but to also verify that the standards which we require are being met. In terms of quality and from a sustainability standpoint as majority of the wet processing happens at this stage.

We also employee agents at printing mills to facilitate our printing in a timely manner whilst ensuring quality isn't compromised. As a part of their mandate they are also required to carry out a wet processor audit at the printing mills to ensure that all mandatory compliances are up to date and processes are being followed.
